Opened in 1982, the museum gathers Italian and non-Italian marble specimens,
archaeological material from Carrara and Luni, and also illustrates the various stages of
marble manufacturing with machinery, tools and a collection of modern sculptures. It is
divided into five sections: the first one is devoted to Carrara's territory morphology and
quarries, starting from the foundation of the Roman settlements of Luna (177 BC); the
second section collects 300 large samples of the best known marbles, granites and stones
from Italy and from the rest of the world; the third explores the early stages of modern
industry from the 18th to the early 20th century. The fourth and the fifth sections show
prototypes of interior and town decoration objects and 25 modern sculptures from the
Biennial Exhibition.
