The museum houses one of the most important natural science collections in Italy. Originally established by Ferdinand I de' Medici in 1591, it gathers the zoological, paleontological, mineralogical, petrographic, and geological collections of the University of Pisa, and also includes an important gallery exhibiting reptiles and birds. The historical section comprises the Gualtieri malacological collection, the dioramas, and the mineralogical collection. Particularly notable is the Cetacean Gallery, which is unique in Europe for the size and the outstanding number of the examples on display (about thirty cetaceans up to 26 metre long), the majority of which were collected by Professor Sebastiano Richiardi at the end of the 19th-century.
